At Mukoko, privacy is not a feature — it is a right. Built on the Ubuntu principle of “Munhu munhu muvanhu”, we believe your data belongs to you.

Your Digital Twin is yours. Your Honey is yours. We do not sell, trade, or monetise your personal data. Ever. Mukoko is operated by Nyuchi Africa (Pvt) Ltd under licence from the Bundu Foundation, and this policy is drafted to satisfy the Zimbabwe Data Protection Act, POPIA (South Africa), and the EU GDPR.

What this policy covers

Mukoko is one identity and one Digital Twin across seventeen mini-apps, four substrate components, and their supporting services. This policy applies to all of them:

  • The mini-apps — Campfire and Pulse (communication); Mukoko News, Bytes, and Novels (content & media); Circles and Nhimbe (community); BushTrade, Wallet, and Jobs (commerce); Places and Transport (place & movement); Mukoko Lingo, Weather, Health, and Planner (knowledge & wellness); and Mukoko ID (identity).
  • The substrate — your Digital Twin, Mukoko Home, the MUKOKO Token layer, and the Ubuntu contribution layer.
  • Mukoko Kweli (kweli.mukoko.com) — the trust platform for place discovery and reviews built on Mukoko Places data.

Some surfaces have their own standalone backends — Mukoko News, for example — but all operate under this single policy.

What we collect

We collect only what is necessary to provide the ecosystem:

  • Account information — email, name, and authentication credentials, handled via Stytch.
  • Identity and verification data — the information tied to your Mukoko ID and its verification tier (from unverified through community, OTP, government, and licensed levels), used to establish trust across the apps.
  • Content you create — posts, messages, chapters, videos, listings, reviews, and other contributions.
  • Transaction data — for Wallet, BushTrade, Jobs, and Nhimbe, the records needed to complete and account for a transaction, including on-chain data where the MUKOKO Exchange Token (MXT) is used.
  • Health, location, and other sensitive data — only where a mini-app you use needs it (Health records, Places/Transport location, Weather location), stored in your Digital Twin pod under your control.
  • Usage and reliability data — anonymised or aggregated interaction patterns and error telemetry used to keep the apps working.

On-device learning

Your Honey, our personalisation engine, learns on your device. Raw behavioural data never leaves your phone. Only a summarised profile syncs to your Mukoko ID — and you can view, edit, or delete it at any time. People under 18 are never profiled.

Your Digital Twin and blockchain data

Your Digital Twin lives in a personal pod on the Nyuchi Honeycomb network and is cryptographically bound to your MUKOKO Identity Token (MIT), a soulbound, non-transferable token. The MXT is a transferable utility token on the Polygon network. Data written to a public blockchain (for example, transaction records and wallet addresses) is, by design, public and cannot be deleted; we minimise what is written on-chain and keep personal data off-chain in your pod wherever possible.

Service providers

We work with a limited set of processors who act on our instructions:

  • Stytch — authentication and session management.
  • Vercel — hosting, content delivery, and privacy-focused web analytics for mukoko.com.
  • Google Analytics — aggregate visitor analytics on the marketing site.
  • Sentry — error and performance monitoring.
  • Sanity — the content management system behind editorial pages.
  • Intercom — the in-page support chat.
  • Formspree and Cloudflare Turnstile — form handling and anti-spam.
  • Polygon — the public blockchain for MXT and MIT.

Data storage

Your data is stored securely with encryption at rest and in transit. Authentication tokens are kept in platform-secure storage (Keychain on iOS, Keystore on Android) — never in browser localStorage.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • Access all data we hold about you.
  • Edit or delete Your Honey profile at any time.
  • Export your data in a portable format.
  • Delete your account and all associated data (subject to the immutable nature of any on-chain records described above).
  • Opt out of any data collection beyond what is required for core functionality.
